A villanelle, at last.

If Once.

If once you loved, let love endure
With the days that pass and the earth that turns
Can one see fade what once was pure?

To preserve strong heart, you may ensure
That the light won't flicker as the candle burns
If once you loved, let love endure.

And the strength is a vigour that may procure
A belief that only the Cynic spurns
Can one see fade what once was pure?

In our modern age nothing is secure
Distracted by abstract, deflecting concerns
If once you loved, let love endure.

When focus fails, meaning is obscure
And nothing is permanent, one learns
Can one see fade what once was pure?

So falter not ever, never be unsure
And remember the spirit of a heart that yearns
If once you loved, let love endure
Can one see fade what once was pure?

I love the spirit behind this poem - basically keep faith in your love and it will stay with you. As Eleanor says, a very hopeful poem. Very elegantly expressed too in spite of the simplicity of the lines.
